Full Story

Est. in 2012 - I took my first stab at creating rEvolve in 2010, but failed miserably. I had been introduced to the sport of disc golf while attending culinary school at Hibbing Community College. Hibbing is part of the Iron Range of Minnesota and used to have a fantastic course called North Hibbing which played along the worlds largest man made mines. These mines helped give the US and it’s allies the edge during the last World War by providing invaluable natural resources.. Now, back to disc golf..I was given a couple of discs from my mom (an avid knitter) who had stopped in at the local Knitting Knights shop in downtown Hibbing. The store primarily sold knitting supplies and yarn, but also discs. Even though the sport had been taking off long before I learned about it, this was my first introduction.

After quickly falling in love with the low-cost nature of the sport, and already a big supporter of outdoor activities, I couldn’t get enough. Around the same time I learned about discing, mobile apps (specifically iOS apps) were beginning to hit the market. I had one of the first generation touch screen iPods at the time and there weren’t any disc golf apps to find courses. I was aware of a few websites to help find new courses and saw an opportunity for a similar product for smart phones. Long story short, my first stab at getting an app developed (which I was going to call iFlyFree MN) was a failure. I invested the small amount of savings that I had into a developer that I hired through a site called Elance (now UpWork). The developer provided a basic mock up of the app and disappeared with my investment. I learned the hard lesson of not doing business with shady individuals.

I was able to save up a bit more in the coming years and had another go at getting my app on the market. I essentially wanted built for my own personal use, but figured others would likely find it useful. The second time around - with the help of a financial investment from my parents - I hired Netsmartz to perform the development for me. They’ve been a great company to do business with and were able to produce what I had in mind: something simple, artistic, and powerful.

I released the iOS version of rEvolve in 2012 and have made a few upgrades since. I have plans to continue improving the app per user’s feedback, but always want to stick to my core goals of provide something useful to help a disc golfer’s game without distracting them from it.

Why rEvolve? The name rEvolve came to me while playing a round of disc golf in the Twin Cities of MN. I saw how fast the sport was growing and changing (evolving) and love chucking a (revolving) piece of plastic as much as the next person. I think disc golf in general is a revolution in itself. The sport has gone from being fringe, to one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

I’ll continue to play my part by making improvements to the app, while staying true to the fact that I believe software should be simple, fast, creative, and accessible by all.

“Get in, get out, and go discing.”

Happy discing!
